Socrates Translation in Hindi Para – 1

Socrates lived in Athens about four hundred years before Jesus Christ was born. As a boy, he was ugly, undersized and had a flat nose and bulging eyes. His father was a poor stone-cutter, so he was always rather shabbily dressed.

Hindi Translation – सुकरात ईसा के जन्म से लगभग 400 पूर्व एथेंस में रहते थे | वे बचपन से बदसूरत तथा छोटे कद के थे | उनकी नाक चपटी और आँखे बाहर को निकली हुई थीं | उनके पिता पत्थर काटने वाले एक निर्धन व्यक्ति थे | इसलिए उनके कपडे सदा फटे-पुराने रहते थे |

Like other boys of his age, he went to school, where the most important lessons were music and gymnastics. He also learned some science and mathematics and a little about the stars, but not nearly so much history and geography as children learn today. This strange little creature with a short neck and plain face was a thoughtful child. He watched his companions all the time and allowed very few things to escape his notice.

Socrates did not have a big house or fine furniture. He did not seem to want either wealth or beautiful possessions. As he grew older, he began to think very little of bodily comfort and pleasure. He gave his mind to all that was noble, honourable and just.

Hindi Translation – सुकरात के पास न तो बड़ा मकान था और न ही अच्चा फर्नीचर | उन्हें धन या अच्छी चीजों की भी इच्छा नहीं थी | जैसे-जैसे वे बड़े होते गए, उन्होंने अपने शारीरिक आराम और सुख को ओर सोचन बिल्कुल बंद कर दिया | वे केवल श्रेष्ठ, सम्मानपूर्ण तथा न्यायसंगत बातों के विषय में ही सोचते थे |

Socrates Translation in Hindi Para – 4

Socrates went around the town on foot and talked to people. The Athenians began to look for his familiar figure in the streets and to say to their friends, “Yes, that’s Socrates, come along and talk to him.” After sometime Socrates became famous as a teacher. He wandered along the roads and stood in the market places, talking to anyone who cared to greet him. His listeners were often confused after they had argued whit him or answered his questions, Socrates told his countrymen that everyone must learn to think for himself, so that by using his reason he would have the power to see what was right, just, true and beautiful, and so shape his own conduct.

Hindi Translation – सुकरात नगर में पैदल घूमते थे और लोगों से बातें करते थे | एथेंसवासियों ने गलियों में उनकी परिचित आकृति की प्रतीक्षा करना और अपने मित्रों से यह कहना शुरू कर दिया, “हाँ, यही सुकरात है | मेरे साथ आओ उनसे बातें करो”

कुछ समय बाद सुकरात एक अध्यापक के रूप में प्रसिद्ध हो गए | वह सड़कों पर घूमते रहते थे और बाजारों या व्यस्त जगहों पर खड़े होकर उन सबसे बातें करते थे जो उन्हें सम्मान देते थे | उनको सुनने वाले उनसे बहस करके या उनके प्रश्नों के उत्तर देकर प्राय: दुविधा में पड़कर निरुत्तर हो जाते थे | सुकरात ने अपने देशवासियों से कहा की प्रत्येक व्यक्ति को अपने स्वचिन्तन की योग्यता का विकास करना चाहिए जिससे वह अपनी तर्कशक्ति का प्रयोग करके यह जान सकते की क्या उचित, न्यायपूर्ण, सत्य और सुन्दर है फिर उसी के अनुसार आपना आचरण बनाए रख सके |

He wanted Athens to be a perfect state. He told everyone-both his pupils and his other followers – that this could only happen if every citizen educated his own mind to see what was right and noble. He believed that questioning and discussion would help them do this and so he was forever talking to them in the open streets.

Hindi Translation – वे एथेंस को एक पूर्ण आदर्श राज्य देखना चाहते थे | वे अपने शिष्यों और दुसरे अनुयायियों से कहा करते थे की ऐसा तभी हो सकता है, जबकि प्रत्येक नागरिक अपने मस्तिष्क को यह जानने के लिए शिक्षित करे की क्या सही हौर श्रेष्ठ है? उनका विश्वास था कि प्रश्न पूछने और वाद-विवाद से ऐसा करने में उनको सहायता मिलेगी | इसकी कारण वे हमेशा आम रास्तों पर खड़े होकर उनसे बातें करते थे |

Socrates Chapter Hindi Translation Para – 6

When Socrates was an old man, his fame had spread far and wide. The house of many a rich man opened its doors to him, for people felt honoured to have him as their guest. By degrees, a special group of pupils gathered around him and followed him wherever he went. Among them was a young man called Plato, who treasured every word which his master uttered and in later years became as famous a teacher as Socrates himself.

Hindi Translation – जब सुकरात वृद्ध हो गए तो उनकी ख्याति दूर-दूर तक फ़ैल गई | अनेक धनवान व्यक्तियोंन ने अपने द्वारा उनके लिए खोल दिए, क्योंकि लोग उनको अपना अतिथि बनाने में स्वयं को सम्मानित हुआ मानते थे | धीरे-धीरे उनके ऐसे शिष्य बन गए, जो जहां कहीं वे जाते थे, उनके साथ चलते थे | उनमें से प्लेटो नामक एक नवयुवक भी था जो अपने गुरु द्वारा कहे गए प्रत्येक शब्द को संचित कर लेता था और आगे चलकर वह सुकरात के समान ही प्रसिद्ध अध्यापक बना |

But although many people loved the old man and delighted in his wisdom, there were some who did not approve of him. He taught that man’s own mind influenced his conduct more than the Gods. This seemed to some people a new and wicked idea. He said that there were higher and nobler deeds than making sacrifices to Athens and the other Gods of Greece, and many people thought that he was leading the young astray, questioning all that they had been taught to believe and filling their minds with doubt.

Hindi Translation – यद्यपि बहुत से लोग उस बूढ़े व्यक्ति से प्रेम करते थे तथा उसकी विद्वता से आनंदित होते थे, किन्तु कुछ ऐसे भी थे जो उनकी बातों से सहमत नहीं थे | उन्होंने सीखाया की मनुष्य का मस्तिष्क देवी-देवताओं की अपेक्षा व्यक्ति के आचरण को प्रभावित करता है | कुछ लोगों को यह विचार नया और दुष्टतापूर्ण लगा | उन्होंने कहा कि एथेंस और यूनान के देवी-देवताओं को बलि देने की अपेक्षा अधिक श्रेष्ठ तथा महान कार्य और भी हैं | अनेक लोगों ने सोचा की वे नवयुवकों को गलत राह पर ले जा रहे हैं | जो अब तक उन्हें सीखाया गया है वह उस ज्ञान पर संदेह कर रहे हैं और उनके मस्तिष्क को संदेह से भर रहे हैं |

The men who were governing Athens summoned Socrates to appear before them and to stand his trail His friends begged him to escape or to hide until the storm had blown over. But Socrates was no coward. He knew that he had done nothing wrong and that he had only taught what he believed to be just, true and honourable and so he went to the court. His clothes and shoes were dusty and travel-stained. But everyone knew that a noble heartbeat under the shabby garments.

Hindi Translation – एथेंस के शासकों ने सुकरात को अपने सामने उपस्थित होने और मुकदमें में अपनी सफाई देने के लिए बुलाया | उनके मित्रों ने उनसे तूफान शांत हो जाने तक भाग जाने या छिप जाने की प्रार्थना की | परन्तु सुकरात कायर नहीं थे | वे जानते थे कि उन्होंने कोई गलत कार्य नहीं किया है और केवल वही सीखाया है जिसे वे सही, उचित और सम्मानीय समझते थे और इसलिए वे न्यायालय में गए | एक लम्बी यात्रा के कारण उनके कपडे और जूते गंदे धब्बों और धुल से भर गए थे | परन्तु प्रत्येक व्यक्ति जानता था कि इन गंदे कपड़ों में एक उदार ह्रदय की धड़कन छिपी हुई है |

He made a powerful and dignified speech. He told the Athenians that they would gain nothing by taking away the last few years of his life, but that he was willing to die many deaths for what he believed to be right.

Hindi Translation – उन्होंने एक सशक्त और शानदार भाषण दिया | उन्होंने एथेंसवासियों से कहा कि उनके जीवन के कुछ वर्ष लेकर उन्हें कोई लाभ नहीं होगा, परन्तु जिस बात को वे उचित समझते हैं उसके लिए वे अनेक बार मरने को तैयार हैं |

The judges listened to him questioned him and condemned him to death. The old man made no complaint. He leaned on his stick, looking around the crowded courtroom. Plato and his other pupils were there in court all the time. “No evil can happen to a good man,” he told them “either in life or after death, so be of good cheer. I have to go. The hour of my departure has arrived and we go our ways, I to die and you to live.”

Hindi Translation – न्यायधीशों ने उनकी बात को सुना, उनसे प्रश्न पूछे और उन्हें मृत्युदंड दे दिया | उस वृद्ध व्यक्ति ने कोई शिकायत नहीं की | वह अपनी छड़ी पर झुके हुए भीड़ से खचाखच भरी अदालत को देखता रहा | प्लेटो और उनके अन्य शिष्य पुरे समय अदालत में थे | उन्होंने उनसे कहा, “अच्छे व्यक्ति का उसके जीवन में या मृत्यु के बाद कोई बुरा नहीं हो सकता | अत: तुम प्रसन्न रहो, मुझे जाना ही है | मेरे जाने का समय आ गया है और हमें अपने-अपने मार्ग पर जाना है, मुझे मरने के लिए और तुम्हें जीवित रहने के लिए”

Then the soldiers came and took him away to prison. His wife followed with his three children. Many of his favourite pupils were also with him. For a long time, they talked to him and he taught them many wise lessons which they treasured in their hearts. But all the time his friends knew that Socrates would die soon. They were sad. “For,” as Plato wrote, “he was like a father of whom we were being bereaved and we were about to pass the rest of our lives as orphans.”

Hindi Translation – तब सिपाही आए और उन्हें जेल ले गए | उनक पत्नी तीन बच्चों को लेकर उनके साथ गई | उनके अपने प्रिय शिष्य भी उनके साथ थे | बहुत देर तक उन्होंने सुकरात से बारें की और सुकरात ने उन्हें बहुत से शिक्षाप्रद उपदेश दिए जिन्हें उन्होंने ह्रदयगम कर लिया | परंतु पुरे समय उनके मित्र यही अनुभव करते रहे की सुकरात शीघ्र ही मर जाएंगे | वे दुखी थे | “क्योंकि”, जैसा प्लेटों ने लिखा है, “वह हमारे लिए पिता तुल्य थे, जिससे हमें वंचित किया जा रहा है और हम हमें शेष जीवन अनाथों की तरह व्यतीत करना पड़ेगा”

Socrates Translation in Hindi Para – 12

After the sun had set behind the tree-tops, the jailor came in and asked Socrates to prepare for death.
In Athens, when people were condemned to die, they were given a cup of poison. Socrates knew this and he nodded to the jailor who looked at him sadly saying “You, Socrates, whom I know to be the noblest and gentlest and best of all whoever came to this place, will not be angry with me when I ask you to drink the poison for others, and not I am the guilty cause,” Bursting into tears he went out and returned with a cup of poison.

Hindi Translation – पेड़ों की चोटियों के पीछे सूर्य के छिपने के बाद अर्थात सायंकाल के बाद जेलर आया | उसने सुकरात से मरने के लिए तैयार होने के लिए कहा |

एथेंस में जब लोगों को मृत्युदंड देते थे, तो उन्हें एक जहर का प्याला पीने के लिए दिया जाता था | सुकरात इस बात को जानते थे | उन्होंने सिर हिलकर जेलर को सहमति दे दी, जो दुःख के साथ यह कहता हुआ उनकी ओर देख रहा था, “आप सुकरात, जिसे मैं इस स्थान पर अब तक जाने वाले सभी व्यक्तियों में सबसे उदार, सज्जन और श्रेष्ट मानता हूँ, मुझसे नाराज तो नहीं होंगे जब मैं आपको जहर पीने के लिए कहूँगा, क्योंकि इसका दोषी मैं नहीं, बल्कि अन्य व्यक्ति है” फुट-फुटकर रोता हुआ वह बाहर गया और एक जहर का प्याला लेकर लौटा |

“May the Gods prosper my journey from this to the other world,” said Socrates and lifted the cup to his lips.
His pupils tried to keep back their tears, but one sobbed aloud and this distressed the others and soon, the room was filled with the sound of weeping.

Hindi Translation – सुकरात ने कहा, “ईश्वर मेरी इस लोक से दुसरे लोक की यात्रा सफल करो” और जहर का प्याला उठाकर होठों से लगा लिया | उसके शिष्यों ने अपने आंसुओं को रोकने का प्रयास किया, लेकिन उनमें से एक जोर-जोर से सिसकियाँ भरने लगा और इससे अन्य भी रोने लगे तथा शीघ्र ही कमरा रोने की आवाजों से भर गया |

Socrates paused, with the unfinished cup of poison in his hands. “What’s this strange noise ?” he asked. “I have heard that a man should die in peace. You mustn’t cry. Be silent and have patience.” He looked around, remembering something. “Crito,” he whispered to one of his pupils, “Can you do me a favour? I owe a cock to Aesculapius. Will you pay the debt ?”
“It shall be paid,” said Crito. “Is there anything else ?” He waited, but there was no answer, for “Socrates, the greatest of all the Greeks, was dead.”

Hindi Translation – जहर का प्याला समाप्त किए बिना ही सुकरात बीच में रुके और बोले, “यह कैसा विचित्र शोर है? मैंने सुना है कि व्यक्ति को शांतिपूर्वक मरना चाहिए | तुम्हें रोना नहीं चाहिए | शांत हो जाओ व् धैर्य रखो |”  किसी बात को याद करते हुए उन्होंने चारों तरफ देखा | उन्होंने अपने शिष्यों में से एक से धीरे से कहा, “क्रिटो, क्या तुम मुझ पर एक अहसान कर सकते हो? मैं एस्कुलेपियस के एक मुर्गे का ऋणी हूँ | क्या तुम इस ऋण को चूका दोगे?”

क्रिटो ने उत्तर दिया – “यह ऋण चूका दिया जाएगा | क्या और कुछ बात है?” वह कुछ देर रुका लेकिन कोई उत्तर नहीं मिला, क्योंकि समस्त यूनानियों में महानतम सुकरात मर चुके थे |

He wanted Athens to be a perfect state. He advised every citizen to educate his own mind to see what is right and noble. He believed that questioning and discussing would help them do this. So he was talking to them forever in the open streets.

(वे एथेंस को एक आदर्श राज्य बनाना चाहते थे | उन्होंने प्रत्येक नागरिक को सलाह दी कि वह यह देखने के लिए अपने मस्तिष्क को शिक्षित करें कि क्या उचित और श्रेष्ठ है | उनका विश्वास था कि प्रश्न करने और विचार-विमर्श करने से इसमें सहायता मिलेगी इसलिए सदैव वे खुली हुई गलियों में बातें करते रहते थे)

Socrates became famous because he chose the streets for talking people. He would question them, argue them and then would leave them to think for themselves. His fame has spread far and wide.

(सुकरात इसलिए प्रसिद्ध हो गए क्योंकि उन्होंने लोगों से वार्तालाप करने के लिए सड़कों को चुना | वे लोगों से प्रश्न पूछते उनसे वाद-विवाद करते तथा उन पर ही छोड़ देते कि स्वयं सोच-समझकर निष्कर्ष निकालें | उनकी ख्याति दूर-दूर तक फ़ैल गई)

Many peoples gathered around him and followed whenever he went.

(बहुत से शिष्य उनके चारो ओर एकत्र हो जाते थे और जहाँ कहीं भी वे जाते थे, उनके पीछे-पीछे जाते थे)

Q3. Why were Socrates’ ideas considered wicked?

(सुकरात के विचारों को दुष्टतापूर्ण क्यों समझा गया?)

Ans. Socrates told his countrymen that everyone must learn to think for himself. But some people did not approve of Socrates. Some of Socrates’s teaching created confusion in their mind. Socrates taught that min’s own mind influences his conduct more than the Gods.

(सुकरात ने अपने देशवासियों को बताया की प्रत्येक व्यक्ति को अपने आप के बारे में सोचना सीखना चाहिए | लेकिन कुछ लोगों ने सुकरात को मान्यता नहीं दी | सुकरात की कुछ शिक्षाओं ने अपने मस्तिष्क में परेशानी पैदा कर दी थी | सुकरात ने शिक्षा दी कि व्यक्ति का अपना मस्तिष्क उसके आचरण को देवताओं की अपेक्षा अधिक प्रभावित करता है)

(न्यायलय में सुकरात के साथ क्या हुआ?)

Ans. People of Athens thought that Socrates was misleading the young astray. He filled their mind with doubt by questioning them.

(एथेंस के लोगों ने सोचा की सुकरात नवयुवकों को बहका रहे हैं | उन्होंने प्रश्न करके उनके मस्तिष्क में संदेह भर दिया है)

Socrates was summoned to appear before the court and stand his trial. He was fearless. Despite the advice of his friends, he went to court.

(सुकरात को अदालत में हाजिर होने और अपने अभियोग की पैरवी करने को कहा गया | वे निर्भीक थे | अपने मित्रों के परामर्श के विपरीत वे न्यायालय में गए)

Socrates made an influential and dignified speech. He told them that they would gain nothing by taking away the last few years of his life.

(सुकरात ने प्रभावशाली और उच्चकोटि का भाषण दिया | उन्होंने कहा कि उसके जीवन के अंतिम कुछ वर्ष लेकर उनको कोई लाभ नहीं होगा)

The judge listened to him, the questioned him and they condemned him to heath. The old man was not disturbed in the least. He was willing to die may death for what he believed to be right.

Q6. Who was Plato? How do you know that he loved Socrates?

(प्लेटो कौन था? आप कैसे जानते हैं कि वह सुकरात में प्रेम करता था?)

Ans. Plato was the true pupil of Socrates. He treasured every word which his master spoke. He himself became a famous teacher later on.

(प्लेटो सुकरात का सच्चा शिष्य था | प्लेटो उस प्रत्येक शब्द को संचित कर लेता था, जो उनके गुरु ( सुकरात) बोलते थे | बाद के वर्षों में वह स्वयं सुकरात की भांति ही एक प्रसिद्ध शिक्षक बन गया)

When Socrates wandered along the roads and stood in the market places, Plato and his other pupils gathered around him and followed him wherever he went.

(जब सुकरात सड़कों पर घूमते थे और बाजारों में खड़े होते थे प्लेटो तथा उसके अन्य शिष्य उन्हें चारों ओर से घेर लेते थे तथा उनके साथ वहीँ जाते थे जहाँ वे जाते थे)

When the judge summoned him to court, Plato and his other pupils were there in the court all the time. And when soldiers took Socrates away to prison, he was also with him. In the last of Socrates lifted the poison cup to his lips, Plato and his other pupils weep bitterly.

(जब न्यायाधीशों ने उन्हें न्यायालय में बुलाया, प्लेटो तथा उनके अन्य शिष्य पुरे समय न्यायालय में थे और जब सैनिक सुकरात को जेल लेकर गए प्लेटो भी उनके साथ था | अंत में जब सुकरात ने जहर का प्याला अपने होंठों से लगाया तो प्लेटो तथा अन्य शिष्य बुरी तरह से रोए)

We know that Plato loved Socrates because he wrote, “he was like a father of whom we were being bereaved and we were about to pass the rest of our lives as orphans.”

(हम जानते हैं की प्लेटो सुकरात से प्रेम करता था क्योंकि उसने लिखा था, “वे हमारे लिए एक पिता-तुल्य थे, जिनसे हमें वंचित किया जा रहा है और अब हमें शेष जीवन अनाथों की तरह व्यतीत करना पड़ेगा”

Q7. How and why was Socrates condemned to death?

(सुकरात को मृत्युदंड कैसे तथा क्यों दिया गया?)

Ans. There were some people who did not approve of Socrates. Some of his teachings created confusion in their mind. Socrates taught that man’s own mind influences his conduct more than the gods. Socrates said that there was a higher and nobler deed than making sacrifices to goddess Athena and other gods of Greece. Many people thought that he was misleading the young astray be filling their minds with doubts. He teachings seemed to be new and wicked.

(कुछ ऐसे लोग थे, जो सुकरात को मान्यता नहीं देते थे | सुकरात की कुछ शिक्षाओं ने उनके मस्तिष्क में परेशानी पैदा कर दी थी | सुकरात ने शिक्षा दी कि मनुष्य को अपना मस्तिष्क उसके आचरण को देवताओं की अपेक्षा अधिक प्रभावित करता है | सुकरात ने कहा की देवी एथेना तथा अन्य देवी-देवताओं की बलि चढाने की अपेक्षा और कुछ कार्य हैं, जो उच्चतर तथा श्रेष्ठतर हैं | बहुत से लोगों का विचार था कि सुकरात नवयुवकों के मस्तिष्क में शंकाएं भरकर उनको गुमराह कर रहे हैं | उनकी शिक्षाएं नई तथा शरारतपूर्ण प्रतीत हुई)

The men who were governing Athens summoned Socrates to appear before them to stand his trial. The judge listened to Socrates. They questioned him. And finally, they sentenced him to death.

(एथेंस के शासकों ने सुकरात को अपने बचाव में पैरवी करने के लिए नायालय में बुलाया | न्यायधीशों के सुकरात की बातें सुनी | उन्होंने सुकरात से प्रश्न किए और अंतत: उनको मृत्युदंड दे दिया)

Socrates made no complaint. He leaned on his stick and said, “No evil can happen to a good man either in life or after death, so be of good cheer. I have to go.”

(सुकरात ने कोई शिकायत नहीं की | वे अपनी छड़ी पर झुके और कहा, “अच्छे व्यक्ति का न तो इस जीवन में और न ही मृत्यु के पश्चात् कोई बुरा होता है | अत: प्रसन्न रहो | मुझे जाना ही होगा”)
